Bob walked most of the distance alongside the cart, chewing and thinking.

‘What do the local people call this place?’ Fabrice asked him.

Bob shrugged. ‘I dunno,’ he mumbled. ‘Nothin’. Just, boodja. They walk on it every day.’ Bob appeared unusually thoughtful; worrying about the fate of his friend Gorman, so Fabrice presumed. He was wrong.

‘You got to pay me now, Frenchy,’ said Bob, a surprising interruption. ‘Three days guiding at four shillings a day.’ He climbed aboard now, palm up. ‘Twelve shillings.’

‘Three days?’ asked Fabrice. ‘We only left Toodyay yesterday morning.’

‘I got to get home yet,’ explained the mathematician.

Inside his jacket, Fabrice still had a few coins which had escaped drowning in the Avon, and he handed an approximate number to Bob, whose lips moved silently as he counted. It was too much. He mistrusted good fortune but shrugged and pocketed the money.

‘That Parkhurst fella is a thief,’ he advised Fabrice. ‘Goes in your worm cage when you gone.’

Fabrice shrugged. With half of Pauline Jaricot’s money now at the bottom of the Avon, the few sous Eric might have pilfered seemed to matter little.
